Aromatherapy specialist Pat Princi-Jones on why you should have essential oils in your wellness arsenal.
When you think of essential oils, you often think of the sleep-inducing kind but those in the wellness ‘know’ use oils for pretty much everything.
And with winter weather, darker days and a pandemic lurking, a little bit of energy is something we could all do with right now.
“Today’s growing interest in using oils for self-care can be attributed to their ability to soothe body and mind,” explains Pat Princi-Jones an aromatherapy advocate and specialist. “The spike in use is due first and foremost to the allure of their scents and the pleasure essential oils provide. But let’s not forget their therapeutic benefits that also broaden their appeal and make them so popular.
“With stress and anxiety on the rise, we need new ways of dealing with insomnia, lifting moods and boosting energy levels. Aromatherapy is proving a viable option in the complementary health category.”
Here Princi-Jones shares her wisdom on power of health-boosting botanicals – read on to feel revitalised.
How smell improves mood, energy and state of mind:
The ability of fragrances to affect mood has long been recognised. When inhaled, essential oil particles travel directly to the limbic region of the brain where behavioural and emotional responses are registered. A few drops of your favourite oil might just get you into a more balanced headspace. Just by simply inhaling scent particles influences neurotransmitters in the brain to help you think and feel a particular way.
Essential oils can both relax and revive. Oils with a predominantly stimulating effect will increase vitality. For example, rosemary’s potent camphor notes can improve alertness and boost memory. While peppermint’s high menthol content is cooling and awakening. Basil is clarifying and helps alleviate mental strain while the D-limonene compound found in grapefruit and other citrus oils, is uplifting and reviving.
Best oils for energy boosting:
Lemon, eucalyptus, peppermint, bergamot, lemongrass and grapefruit are all great essential oils for boosting energy.
Two blends I recommend for energy:

Best way to use essential oils:
Diffusion and massage are still the most popular methods of use for essential oils. When essential oils are diffused, the particles travel directly to the brain to take effect. When applied to the skin in massage base oil, they travel through dermal layers and into the bloodstream.
Modern day diffusers are the most effective and efficient way to release essential oil particles into the surrounding air. Simple, Easy, No Fuss. But you must follow direction of use and don’t increase dosage or operate diffuser for prolonged periods of time.
Remember to select pure, authentic essential oils to ensure you reap their true benefits – and make sure to invest in a quality diffuser. New technology diffusers don’t require heat, so the oil’s chemical structure remains unaltered.
Pat Princi-Jones recommends Oil Garden’s 3-in-1 Ultrasonic Diffuser (RRP $39.99) or In Essence’s Midnight Diffuser (RRP $59.95).
