LIVE FOR LIFE, Duke’s employee wellness program, has plenty of activities to keep you moving and eating healthy this spring. Check out these four programs. 

Duke Run/Walk Club

The Duke Run/Walk Club meets at West and East campuses and Duke Raleigh Hospital.
Theresa Curington cannot help but feel a little competitive when she steps onto East Campus for the Duke Run/Walk Club. 

Curington, who has participated in the Run/Walk Club for the past two years, always sets a personal goal to match the pace of the fastest person in her intermediate walking group. 

“I tell myself I’m not going to finish at the back of the line,” said Curington, a clinical research coordinator for the Duke Office of Clinical Research. “In the end, it doesn’t matter too much though because we’re all walking, talking and having a great time.” 

The 12-week Run/Walk club, which runs March 11 to May 29, and meets at 5:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays on East and West campuses. The club also meets at 11:30 a.m. on Thursdays at Duke Raleigh Hospital. The free program is open to beginner, intermediate and advanced walkers and runners.

Grocery Store Tours

A registered dietitian leads each Grocery Store Tour.
Become a health-savvy shopper with a LIVE FOR LIFE Grocery Store Tour. 

The tours are on the second Monday and Thursday of every month at the Harris Teeter at Erwin Square on Hillsborough Road in Durham. Themes center on shopping healthy on a budget, making meals for one and cooking when stretched for time. A registered dietitian leads each tour.

“We want to supply you with the information and advice to become a knowledgeable shopper,” said Esther Granville, manager of nutrition and health coaching programs for LIVE FOR LIFE. 

Space is limited. Registration opens for each tour on the 1st of each given month of the tour date.

Duke Farmers Market

Tiffany Atkinson has spent the past seven years of her spring and summer lunch breaks on Fridays at the Duke Farmers Market. 

Atkinson, a recreation therapist for the Duke Cancer Institute, loves buying basil and feta stuffed bread, multi-colored bell peppers and sweet honeydew melon. She evens picks up a few gardening tips from the vendors at the market. 

“I’ve tried to start my own garden, so I love getting advice from the farmers on growing vegetables,” she said. “The market is a really nice way to end the week.” 

The Duke Farmers Market will run 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Friday from April 26 to Sept. 27 on the Duke Medicine Pavilion Greenway.

Duke Mobile Market

The researcher in Wickliffe Shreve loves the mystery of receiving a weekly box of produce from Duke Campus Farm. 

Shreve is never quite sure what’s going to be in the box or what to do with some of the vegetables. By subscribing to the Campus Farm’s community supported agriculture (CSA) through the Duke Mobile Market, Shreve has learned what do with kohlrabi – shred it to top salads – and Jerusalem artichokes – roast them on the stove. 

“It’s fun to figure out the best way to prepare this produce,” said Shreve, a reference librarian and lecturing fellow at the Duke University School of Law. “It’s all so fresh and tastes amazing.”

The Duke Mobile Farmers Market returns this May with four vendors. Employees and students can enroll in Bella Bean Organics, Coon Rock Farm, Duke Campus Farm and Walking Fish Co-op for as low as $25 per week. Pick-up locations are at Sarah P. Duke Gardens, Duke Campus Farm, Smith Warehouse and the Duke University School of Nursing.
