RACINE — When you walk into Lux Beauty Salon, 512 Monument Square, it’s hard to believe the whole thing came together in two weeks.

Owner Jordan Rowland, a fifth-generation Racinian, was a manager at Tangles salon at 304 Main St. but knew she’d want to start her own salon someday.

“It’s really my personality,” said Rowland. “I’m a leader, and this is what I’m destined to do.”

Rowland’s father works Downtown, at CRB Insurance, and noticed when Beaute on the Square relocated to 222 Fifth St. and its large former space was available for lease. He, Rowland, and Rowland’s fiancée divided and conquered the project, and two weeks later Lux Salon was ready to roll.

“Obviously, it felt like it was meant to be because everything came together on time,” said Rowland.

Rowland said she chose the name Lux, short for luxury, to convey the kind of experience she wants her customers to have at the salon. The chic décor includes little extras such as a phone-charging station, mini-cupcakes, water infused with cucumber and lemon, and quarters for the meters.

“I’m just trying to come up with things you don’t see at every salon,” said Rowland. “I’ve heard people say, ‘I feel like I’m in Chicago,’ or ‘I feel like I’m in California.’”

She’s also emphasized with her stylists, who are all full-time employees, that they should take their time with their clients. Unlike salons where stylists rent a chair, Rowland’s don’t have financial pressure to finish as quickly as possible.

“I feel like we’re able to give people a high-quality experience,” said Rowland. “I expect my stylists to not be rushing but giving good head massages, good hand massages.”

Looking ahead

Rowland currently has seven employees including a nail technician for manicures. She plans on hiring more as she expands to include a full line-up of salon services.

The total space Rowland leased is around 6,000 square feet, and so far she’s only using about two-thirds of it. Next month she plans on having the pedicure chairs up and running, and in 2019, she plans on opening the rest of the space so Lux will be a full service salon with waxing, facials and massages.

In addition to women’s cuts, the salon offers men’s and children’s haircuts.

Rowland is planning the salon’s grand opening on May 4, which will include live music and catering from Butcher and Barrel.

Lux Salon is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. To schedule an appointment, call 262-800-1222, but walk-ins are also welcome.
