Not all heroes wear capes – some give you a gown, sit you down in front of a mirror and take scissors to your hair.

Sally’s Salon Services opened their doors to homeless Scots this week to give them a free haircut.

Whether it was a blow dry, beard trim or short back and sides, those who took advantage of the service got much more than a new do.

From 10am till teatime on Thursday, staff at the wholesaler in Glasgow welcomed the city’s homeless into their hairdressing area where they could enjoy tea, coffee, cakes and a chat. First in at the Free Haircuts for our Friends in the Street event at the Oswald Street store was Alex Cameron.

Sporting a mullet and over-grown beard, Alex, 70, has lived on the street off and on for a number of years.

The proud grandfather has appeared as an extra in blockbuster film, The Flying Scotsman, starring Jonny Lee Miller and Billy Boyd, Still Game and Taggart. Alex couldn’t believe the difference once top stylist Kenlee Taylor gave his hair the chop.

He said: “It doesn’t matter how old you are or what you do in life, it’s always good to get the feelgood factor.”

Simon, 49, said: “You can give money to charity but it’s better to see the effects in real life.”
