GALION – Jason Dang focused as he gently brushed a customer’s fingernails at his new shop in Galion named Spicy Nails & Spa.
“I’ve been doing this since I was 16,” he said.
The new store is the first salon he’s owned. It’s open every day of the week at 216A Portland Way North. His hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Dang grew up in Detroit, where he helped his parents in their salon. He eventually left to travel the country, and spent six years in Alabama where he continued learning more about manicures, pedicures and facials.
He finally decided he was too far away from his parents, so he started thinking about moving closer to home. He decided Ohio would be a good fit for him, so he took at job in Ontario and worked there for several years.
“I had a lot of customers from Bucyrus who were driving there,” Dang said.
He decided it was time for him to venture out on his own as a business owner, since he knew the ins and outs of the industry pretty well. He wanted the shop to be in Galion so that he could draw customers from both Bucyrus and Ontario. He found the building and began mapping out his vision.
“It took about six months for the blueprint to be done,” Dang said.
Construction finally began over the summer. The shop was finished by late fall. Dang then had a soft opening, and has helped more than 100 customers already this winter. A few are repeat visitors.
“It takes a while to pick up regular clients,” Dang said. “We’re the only salon in the city,”
Dang and his four employees offer eyebrow waxing, pedicures, manicures, acrylic nails, shellac finishes and organic dipping powder.
Customers have already taken to the shop’s Facebook page to share photos of their nails and offer their reviews of the business — the 17 customers who have already left a rating gave the store a perfect five out of five.
Dang plans to continue using the social media platform to interact with his clients and let them know about any new offerings at his store.
“Until the end of January, we have a 10% off deal,” Dang said. “There’s also a free lotion.”
